“Old, not obsolete”
Ramped up this 10 year old machine with an SSD, few TBs of storage and a copy of Windows Server 2019.
Now it acts as the active directory server, local DNS server and a file backup storage system.
Trainings
The training room where we teach students in HVAC and IT. I handle the IT part, specializing in Python and Database technologies.
Dingo
Original idea to act as the HVAC Assessor / Controller but was scrapped in lieu of better options.
Netgear R6400 + DD-WRT
Installed DD-WRT (a custom firmware for routers) on Netgear R6400 for overclocking the CPU to boost performance and to configure DDNS on it for local traffic filtering using OpenDNS.
VPNs and DNS servers
To keep the office resources under a budget, instead of a leased internet line, used AWS servers to setup a VPN to access resources within the organization when not on premises and forwarding DNS server (to OpenDNS) along with DNSCrypt for network filtering outside the premises.
The Tech Guy
Being the only “tech guy” in the family, frequently was I asked about broken electronics. Thanks to this I must have repaired and refurbished over 100 mobile phones, laptops, computers and other electronics. This taught me about component level repairs and that old hardware can still have a purpose in the modern age.
